Javitri is not really a completely different spice than nutmeg; instead it is the name of a specific part of the nutmeg fruit, the external layer. It’s more commonly known name, at least in the West, is “Mace”, but we choose to use it’s Ayervedic name of Javitri. This spice is, of course, derived from the evergreen nutmeg tree.
It is worth noting that some would say that these are actually two different and distinct spices, and when you are looking to buy Javitri or Jaiphal that may be important to know. All would agree that these spices come from the same fruit from the evergreen nutmeg tree (Myristica Fragans). Some would say that jaiphal is just the center if the fruit, the seed and the skin. Mace is the skin. When the fruit is ripe it is picked and dried, and the seeds become the jaiphal or nutmeg, where the skin becomes Mace or Javitri.

You will usually buy Javitri or Mace in strips, especially if you are going to make a home remedy yourself. Javitri Spice Origins
The fruit of the evergreen nutmeg tree is about the size of an apricot, and from far away it may even be mistaken for this fruit. To understand how we can derive both Jaiphal and Javitri from this fruit we need to understand its layers. We start with a relatively large seed in the middle of the fruit. In the center of the fruit is a red seed. Surrounding the seed is the meat of the fruit, and then there is the external skin.
We get Jaiphal from the seed described above, often ground into a powdery substance for use in recipes or Ayurvedic medicine. The meat of the fruit, often called aril, actually splits into two halves when the fruit is ripe, and that is the part that becomes the Javitri or Mace. Often the aril is dried in the sun to make it into a usable form as a spice. When it is dried it yellows and becomes crumbly.
Javitri Alternate Names
As we’ve said, Jaiphal is called nutmeg outside of India and the surrounding region. This is similar to how Javitri is called Mace in the Western world. Often both of the native terms are used when the spice is being used as a nontraditional medicine in any part of the world.
